Questions and answers

Interested to know about the origin of the breed?

In the county of Cornwall on July 21, 1950, the history of a new breed of cats began to be created. Due to a whim of nature, a typical British shorthair cat was born among the usual curly kitten. The owner of the farm where the young curly grew up, decided that it was not necessary to allow him to spread his genes: the cat was decided to be castrated. Thanks to the veterinarian, who dissuaded Mrs. Ennismore from this step and referred her to the appointment of geneticist Dr. A. K. Jude and breeder B. Steeling-Webb. They recognized the mutation as promising, and advised the cat's owner to try to breed a new breed. Nina Ennismore was trying to breed a rex. The experiment was half successful, and in the mid-50s of the last century, all the resulting animals were euthanized, except for the cat Poldhu. It was bought by B. Stirling-Webb, and he showed the world a new breed, recognized in England in 1967. In parallel, two kittens, who owed their origin to the farm of Nina Ennismore, went from their homeland to the United States, and the granddaughter of Callibanker Lemorna Kav gave the world Cornish Rex, who glorified the breed. The American and British lines developed with some differences: as a result, the long-legged curly-haired American Cornish Rex was recognized by the CFA in 1962.

What kind of care is required for a cornishrex?

Cornish Rex is the most suitable cat for urban conditions, as it does not require special care, even a person without experience in caring for cats can cope with this: They practically do not shed, their wool is invisible in the house and on clothes. Short wavy hair of rexes, consisting of a single undercoat, without guard hairs, does not require special care. It is enough to brush it twice a week, always with natural, not artificial bristles, or wipe the wool cover with a suede cloth. Wash the animal should not be more than once a month, so as not to dry the skin and coat, stroking the cat only in the direction of hair growth. Pay attention that the cat's ears do not get water. You can not dry the cornish with a hair dryer. It is best to feed cornish rex either with natural food, specially prepared for him on the recommendation of a nutritionist, or with ready-made super-premium food. To give the paw an elegant, well-groomed appearance, as well as to protect people and other animals from the inevitable accidental scratching, it is recommended to trim the claws about once a month. An important need of the Cornish Rex is to play with the owner. These cats constantly invent new fun games and ask the owner to take part in them. High intelligence is the main reason why these cats are not as self-sufficient as the rest, and need a master as a friend. Cornish Rex is ideal for those who are not looking for a cat "that walks by itself", but an animal that wants to be a friend to the owner and a full member of the family.

What diseases are characteristic of the breed?

It is estimated that cornish rexes are not prone to hereditary diseases and in general, they get sick a little and have excellent immunity. The normal body temperature of Cornish rexes is slightly higher than that of other cats, and is 38.5 C. Any disease can be determined by an increase in temperature. Diseases that may occur: colds of the upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal diseases, urolithiasis and cystitis. Treatment is strictly on the recommendation of a veterinarian.

What do I need to purchase to maintain the Cornish Rex content?
The ideal toilet for Cornish Rexes would be an enclosed toilet, but being intelligent cats, they can easily get used to any type of toilet. To simplify care, you can use an automatic toilet. The filler should be selected individually the clumping filler eliminates odors well and is suitable for all types of toilets. It is preferable to choose ceramic bowls with rubberized legs, so that they do not slip on the floor. They are eco-friendly and easy to clean. A separate bed is required. Ideally, it should be an isolated warm corner, protected from all sides from noise and light, in which the cornish rex can rest in peace.
You should also install a scratching post in a convenient place, and to draw attention to it, it is recommended to rub a little cat grass (mint). Two-or three-storey scratching posts are the most attractive for gherkins, as the gherkins can not only use it to get rid of the old layer of the claw, but also climb on it, play.
Cornishrex loves to play with people, so by purchasing a couple of teasers and simple games with their help, you will give great pleasure to your pet and yourself. Cornish is happy to run for a small ball or any wind-up toy.
